Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just need someone to listen? The Victims Resource Center is on campus today for office hours. They provide a safe, confidential space to talk about anything that's on your mind, whether it's anxiety, relationship concerns, trauma, or just life's challenges.
You don't need to have a specific issue to stop by. Everyone is welcome. Take a moment for yourself and connect with someone who cares.
The Multicultural club has set up boxes near the student Life lounge to collect donations for local children through the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. Please consider making a donation of a new unwrapped toy to benefit a child in Luzerne/ Lackawanna county. The drive will run through Tuesday, December 16th. Thank you.
As Luzerne County Community College continues its Celebrating Our Centers series throughout December, the College is highlighting a major milestone at its Wilkes-Barre Center: record-setting fall enrollment that surpassed 500 students for the first time in the Center's 25-year history.
This fall, 524 students enrolled in in-person classes at the downtown Wilkes-Barre location - a historic high for the Center and a reflection of strong, sustained growth in the city. The Center saw a 17% increase in headcount and a 21% increase in credits compared to last fall, said Adam Blannard, director of the LCCC Wilkes-Barre Center.
"Knowing the Wilkes-Barre Center has been here since 1999 and this is the first time we've crossed the 500-student mark is incredibly meaningful, Blannard said. "It shows that the hard work of our faculty and staff is translating into students not only returning, but also encouraging new students to join us."
A Downtown Hub for Access and Opportunity
Located at 2 Public Square, the Wilkes-Barre Center has become an anchor for higher education and workforce training in the heart of the city. In partnership with the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, the Center serves a wide range of students --from recent high school graduates to adult learners balancing work and family responsibilities.
The Center features:
Three networked computer labs
Smart classrooms with advanced presentation technology
Seminar rooms and traditional classrooms
Video-conferencing and roll-about teaching units
Flexible 13-week class schedules
A mix of in-person and online course options
Degree pathways include Criminal Justice, Human Services, Legal Assisting (Paralegal), Social Work, and General Studies, along with dual enrollment opportunities for high school students and visiting students from four-year institutions.
The Center is also home to the long-running Adult Learners' Training and Assistance (ALTA) Program, which offers free GED preparation, English as a Second Language courses, Family Literacy programs, and Digital Literacy instruction.
A Culture Students Want to Be Part Of
Blannard said the fall numbers reflect more than just enrollment trends - they reflect a campus culture that students are choosing, recommending, and returning to.
"I think it's the culture we've built here," he said. "When students walk through the doors, they're welcomed by name. They feel supported, they feel seen, and they know we're here to help them succeed. That experience travels by word of mouth, and it brings new students through the door."
He added that the Center's downtown location plays a key role.
"A lot of our students live or work right here in the city. They want an affordable, high-quality education close to home - and they want to give back to the same community they're part of."
Student Stories: Support That Makes a Difference
Students say the Wilkes-Barre Center gives them real opportunities and a sense of belonging.
Kailash Velazques, a Wilkes-Barre resident and parent of a young child, says LCCC gave her a path forward.
"I didn't want to stop where I was - I wanted to work for my future," she said. "My cousin took classes here and told me about the opportunities, the financial help, and the support system. They've covered almost everything for me. I'm doing my associate degree now because I want to go to law school and eventually become a judge here in Wilkes-Barre."
Asia Rose, of Old Forge, said the level of support exceeded her expectations.
"I've definitely been able to ask for help - and it's not intimidating," she said. "There are so many resources, and the people genuinely care. I don't feel like just a number. My professors know my name."
Growing With the Community
Blannard said the Center's diversity is one of its greatest strengths.
"We have traditional students, adult learners, parents, people working multiple jobs - and we build schedules that work for all of them," he said. "We don't treat students as just another face. We look at their individual situation and help them create a path to finish on time."
With its highest enrollment ever, the Wilkes-Barre Center continues to grow as a vibrant destination for education, workforce development, and community impact.

There are just a few names left from the Holiday Head Start gift collection!
Consider "adopting" a child from the Head Start school on campus this holiday season. Choose a name and purchase some gifts for them - for many of them, these may be the only gifts they receive this holiday season.
Just come to the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department suite in building 3 and pick a child to purchase gifts for. Simply take the photocopy of the ornament in the file on the door, sign your name in the appropriate class and next to the child's name, and then return the gifts to the department no later than Monday, December 8 so that we can get them to Head Start in time.
The gifts should be wrapped when they are returned.

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Wellness Committee will kick off the Winter Warrior Warmup sock collection for local veterans. The LCCC Wellness Committee has partnered with Heroes Hearthstone from Dallas, PA.
Heroes Hearthstone is a Pennsylvania-proud, registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, supported by volunteers and funded through donations and grants.
New, unworn socks can be dropped off at the Fitness Center Desk, second floor, building 14, in front of the Student Life office, third floor, building 14, and building 5. If you would like a basket for your area, please contact Miranda (mcosta@luzerne.edu)

The Social and Behavioral Sciences Department would like to thank all who made the 33rd Annual Pennsylvania History Conference a success this past Monday a success. Thanks to the presenters and to all who attended.
Mark your calendars for the 34th Annual Pennsylvania History Conference on Monday, October 12, 2026. The topic will be "Immigration in Pennsylvania History".
For your safety and the safety of the renovation workers on campus, please do not walk under or climb over caution tape and/or construction barriers to access sidewalks and buildings.
Alternate egress is available to all buildings throughout the renovations.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make these important improvements to our campus.
There are some campus infrastructure and modernization projects taking place on our Main Campus that have begun this week, and which will continue over the next few months. We will work to coordinate the building exterior projects so that there is the least amount of disruption to the College community as possible.
All work will be conducted with the safety of everyone considered first and within compliance of all regulations for the work being completed. The project includes roof replacement on five (5) building roofs - Buildings 3, 7, 11, 12, and 13; plus, ten gazebo roofs; and four (4) canopy roofs.
The removal of the existing stone fascia, abatement of asbestos containing materials, and replacement with a metal panel fascia will take place on buildings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11.
Additionally, approximately 500 existing blackout spandrel panels (window panel work) on Buildings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 will be cleaned, resealed, and painted; miscellaneous minor repairs and painting of EIFS Fascia and Masonry Cleaning at Building 4; and preparing (sanding/grinding) for and painting of the four (4) canopies on campus.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we make these important infrastructure improvements to our campus.
Our fall semester hours are as follows: Monday-Thursday: 8 - 5pm, Friday: 8 - 4pm, Closed Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to having your order number ready to give to any present Bookstore staff member(Ex: 21270000026603), you must have ID on-hand to also present to a staff member.
If someone else is picking up your order on your behalf, you must email a staff member that you are giving permission to do so.
A message such as "I John Doe, give permission to Jane Doe to pick up my order of 21270000026603" will suffice. That is the only way someone else can pickup on order an your behalf.

This season's selection, The Village Beyond the Mist, is a beautifully written and timeless fantasy novel from acclaimed Japanese author Sachiko Kashiwaba. It's been 50 years since this novel, which was the inspiration for Studio Ghibliâ's Spirited Away, was originally published in Japanese. It was published in English for the first time ever earlier this year.

Student Life is hosting chair massages for stress awareness as we enter the end of the semester. We invite all registered students to sign up for a little bit of rest and relaxation.
Chair Massages will take place on Wednesday, November 19th in the Rotunda of Campus Center (Building 14). Each massage will last about 15 minutes. First massages begin at 11:00 AM, and run through 2:00 PM.
Sign-ups are required and can be done in the Student Life Office (Campus Center 3rd Floor - back of the Student Lounge).
